Scion is Developing a Sub-FR-S Sportscar

Toyota has said that it is developing a compact sports car that will sit below the FR-S. On Drive, chief engineer Testsuya Yada confirmed that Toyota is developing the concept which is being billed as a little brother to the Toyota GT86.

The company is undecided as to whether it will be a two-seater or a 2+2 model. But we do know that it will be rear-wheel drive with a focus on handling. No real info on the engine yet, but it is likely that the compact sports car will get a hybrid system to help boost performance.

They say its supposed to look like this...

I wonder if this is the first project of the Mazda Toyota alliance?

That picture isn't showing up. Is it the same one from the article link you posted?

It would definitely be a cool car to add to the Scion line up. I find it interesting that the article says that this Toyota will compete against the Mazda MX-5. I question if Mazda would help Toyota make a vehicle that would compete with one of their best sellers.
They could be onto something with this, possibly kicking off or helping to kick off a new segment for the industry here, that's if Honda doesn't beat them to it. I know Honda had plans to bring over an S1000 or some lower displacement compact roadster or coupe.

LOL speculative render, someone just shortened the proportions of the FR-S. I don't know if the project can fly. FRS isnt making its sales goals, GM killed their small coupe and Nissan just did the same...
It looks kinda cool, but at the same time it doesn't actually look like something that is going to happen. I think that I like the grille. Very simple, but looks good.
Some people have been saying its going to look like that spec-Ed 86 they came out with in Japan a few months back
This one?

Just that's FR-S with a redesigned face, doesn't seem sub-FR-S, still same proportions, 90% FR-S
With how poor the FR-S is selling right now, I cannot believe Toyota is developing a smaller sports car...

its coming out of their relationship with Mazda. Even the FR-S is given more leash then it probaably should as development costs were kept ultra low for Toyota by raiding the Subaru cupboard.

Word has it that Toyota is planning a rather radical new sports car concept for debut later this year. According to Australia's Motoring website, the project calls for an open-wheel, three-seat sports car concept. It's tipped to pack a 1.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain inside a narrow nose, driving around 100 horsepower through a CVT to the rear wheels.

Made largely of carbon fiber, the concept is tipped to pack a similar footprint to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, only with open (but likely fendered) wheels – sort of like on a Caterham Seven – and a three-seat cockpit with a central driving position. The concept is expected to debut at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show late in October. If reactions are positive enough, the Japanese industrial giant could even put it into production by 2017.

If this is being developed with Mazda, might this be a Scion version of the new Mazda Miata MX-5? I think Mazda is building a version for Fiat (I heard something about it being called Fiat 124), so maybe Mazda will build another version for Scion?
Toyota version of this? ....

I'll take it with a 2JZ, thanks :D

It will be built for Toyota, if they chose to hand it to Scion in NA is another question. Not sure. I still wonder if the FR-s Wouldn't of sold better with a Toyota badge on the nose instead...

That might require some gangsta lean

I've heard that styling similar to this guy may be on the table for something sub FR-S... that is if they dont go open wheel...
