Hello gentlemen, I'm new to this whole forum gig, but I would like to discuss oil changes. Has anyone done their first oil change? If so what kind of oil/filter did you use and what millage interval was the vehicle at? I have just rolled over 3,000 miles on my iM and I feel that is time for its first oil change. Would appreciate your guy's input and thoughts. Thanks!

Do your oil change & filter every 5k miles. Scion covers the first 5 oil changes at the dealer, unless you want to do it yourself. The OEM oil filters is best in my opinion. Here are the part numbers below.

0W-20 oil (5qts.)
04152-YZZA6 - oil filter element
90430-12031 - drain plug gasket

Depends on how you drive but 5k is a safe bet.
From the manual for the 5k maintenence.

Driving while towing, using a car-top
carrier, or heavy vehicle loading4 :

That thread has people stating to do an oil change around 1,000 miles more or less....do you agree with the points in that thread or should I wait until the 5,000 mile mark for its first oil change? I am iffy with the whole new engine and metal shavings and whatnot.

First true changing of oil will take place at 10k per Toyota maintenance schedule. It is true that Toyota/Scion will take care of the first 5 visits, but those are maintenance events only - 5k (1st visit), 15k (3rd), 25k (5th) is rotate tires and check everything and 10k (2nd) and 20k (4th) is rotate, oil change and check everything.

As far as break in, I have yet to see where normal driving conditions makes it necessary to change oil that quickly. However, if you are planning on tracking or autoxing then you could make a case for it.

First oil change at 500 miles
Dirty and black
Replaced it with Vavoline Syn Power 0-20

Second oil change at 3,000 miles
Dirty and brown
Replaced it with Royal Purple 0-20

When I say dirty and black I am just going off of a visual inspection which really does not tell you much except for color.

Next oil change at 10,000 miles at the dealer.

I honestly could not tell a difference between the two oils except price, and I think the regular oil from Toyota is just fine since it is a stock car.

Royal purple was around $60 with a K&N filter.

Vavoline was $35 with a STP filter from AutoZone special.

2017 Toyota IM...did my 1st oil change at 2,000 miles. Fill up with 4.5 quart of Mobil 1 full synthetic 0w-20. Took a total of 15 minutes. Oil is just like new..very light reddish tan color... similiar to the Mobil 1 oil I am putting in the car.

I was looking for signs of metal shaving in the old oil, but was not able to. Maybe the shaving is being trapped in the oil filter.

With modern manufacturing techniques there is very little if any "shavings" to be found, which is why the break-in period is small and the oil change intervals are large. They're built better so there's little need for the engine to figure out how to fit together like in the old days.

There is zero reason to change your oil at 3k or even 5k. I mean if you want to waste your money on oil and oil filters because of "metal shavings" lol..The dealer states that 1st oil change is performed at 10k miles. This isnt 1974 anymore, we are in 2000's!🤙

I agree. I did my first oil change on my 2003 Tiburon Gt at recommended 5k miles non-synthetic. 280k miles later, its still running strong. No oil leaks, no oil burn, and never failed smog. When I had my first oil change for the iM, I asked for the oil filter and found zero metal.
