Hello everyone. Been a while sense I've been here. No longer having my blue tooth issues from last year. Got rid of the apple phone. Anyway I'm sorry if this was posted before but I didn't see it during my search.

What I would like to do is change out the stock radio I have for one that supports android auto. I don't have much experience swapping out radios but it seems straight forward. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? I'd like to be able to use the controls on the steering wheel after upgrading if possible.

Curious as to what issues you had with the stock radio. I actually like the stock radio and it works perfect with my iPhone 8+. The BT works great too.

Thank you everyone for you replies. To answer your question as to what my issue was with the stock radio. I use to have a iPhone 6s and when I got into my car it would connect and wait about 30 seconds to play music/podcast. Most of the time not at all. I had to start the music from my phone which would play over my phones speaker for a bit then swap to the radio. This happened when I updated to ios 9. I keep the phone up to day and until two months ago still had that problem until I swapped to an android phone.

Ya for some reason certain iPhones don't work well on Toyota's headunit

The stock radio is ok, (still using it), but just lacking in several features.

Many bemoan the lack of Android Auto/CarPlay
Plays music from the radio just fine as well as from my iPod. It also works great for BT music from my iPhone. I don't really understand the obsession with Apple Carplay and Android Auto but I hear that Apple Carplay will be able to be added to previous years models so that should make some happy in the near future when that occurs.

Have you tried it in a car?

I'm not in a hurry to swap out the stock headunit but having had Android Auto in a couple of rentals, it is much better.

I've used Apple CarPlay before in a rental and I tried to get the lowdown on it from a local car stereo store. I guess I just don't use the features like others do. I just listen to the radio or music from my ignore through BT or a connected iPod. Seems to do everything I need and as long as I can answer calls through BT I'm okay with that. Not sure why anyone else needs much more then that.
