Fuel additives to improve mpg... good idea?

Most of my driving takes place in a metropolitan area, so my gas mileage is not that great. I drive a CVT and I get an average 25mpg or less in the city. Also, gas prices sucks here since I live on an island.

I plan to replace my air filter with TRD and put fuel additives to improve mpg and longevity for my car. You guys think its a good idea? I was researching about it and it seems to help. check this link and comment.

I personally don't think additives are going to increase mpg plus the cost of the additives could just go towards gas. I will say they will help if your car has high mileage, my 86 camry has 258,000 miles, but on a brand new car I doubt it will do much. I could be wrong but I would put the money towards gas.

I wonder if the type of gas affects mpg....

If there is anywhere around you that sells 100% pure unleaded gas use that rather than the ethanol mix at most pumps. You mentioned you live on an island.... check local marinas they usually sell it. You'll get much better mileage. Additives are only really good for removing deposits... you may get a fraction better gas mileage, BUT there will be no cost benefit great enough to cover the cost of the additive itself.

Active car enthusiast since 1996... This is my second brand new Scion (previously owned a 2005 XB). Loving my 2016 Scion iM Electric Storm Blue 6 speed!

Apparently they use pure gas for testing. With E10 or 15 you would lose about 10% of the rated mpg. No wonder I always get 25 or less mpg combined. I've also heard ethanol gives a cleaner burn than pure. Ethanol fuel is essentially bio-fuel. Any thoughts on that?

We do have a few that sell pure gas. Will try this out once my tank is low.

Depends on what you mean by "cleaner burn"... cooler burn for sure (hence why a lot of turbo charged guys convert to e85), but I don't know much about EPA ratings and/or the environmental impact. As for it being bio-fuel... ethanol is commonly called "corn juice"

Not for me. Pure gas would be the same price as premium unleaded. What I've been told we only have pure 89 unleaded on few stations.
