Yea that thing at the beginning of the exhaust is too big to be a cat.

Pic of the o2 sensor before the first muffler:

Pic of the flange after the first muffler:

I wonder how aftermarket exhausts will get rid of that thing.

Some more info here:

Auris Exhaust Upgrade - Auris Club - Toyota Owners Club - Toyota Forum

Here is the original piping with muffler. And the biggest part is the resonator, which is huge

Here is a picture of upgraded system with new piping, smaller resonator and upgraded muffler.

I'm fairly certain those last two pics are from a 1st gen Auris, BUT they are very helpful. If you look at the pictures of the first gen there is actually a bolt flange just after the O2 sensor.... that flange is not there on out exhaust systems... that's where I had mine cut.

Honestly I do not see how aftermarket exhaust systems are going to get that thing out of there unless they are a complete exhaust including a new header, OR they are just going to sell axle backs that look fancy and don't make any noise at all. We'll see.

Active car enthusiast since 1996... This is my second brand new Scion (previously owned a 2005 XB). Loving my 2016 Scion iM Electric Storm Blue 6 speed!

Took off the stock resonator-back exhaust. The downpipe + cat + resonator is one piece.

Results:
- Has a very nice sounding deep note.
- Not very loud, I'd say the sound level is perfect, on par with many stock European sports cars.

ATTENTION aftermarket exhaust makers: Just do a straight pipe, it's sounds perfect like this without any mufflers.

Good discovery, also in for hearing how it sounds, hopefully you recorded a clip of it

Here you go buddy! It's inside the car with the windows down. Though the video really doesn't do it justice.

Short of upgrading the headers and downpipe this is really the best exhaust mod for this car. The outlet is surrounded by heat shield. There's less weight than putting on an aftermarket exhaust and more flow. Not too loud and sounds great. The exit is behind the driver so it's even SCCA legal. It's as if the engineers had this mod in mind when designing the car!
